Jesus spoke these words in His Sermon on the Mount and is one of Beatitudes, the patterns of life that Christ set for us to follow.
To pursue peace is a commandment, and like all Gods instructions must be adhered to; anything else is rebellion.
The book of Hebrews tells us, “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.”
Hebrews 12:14-17 NKJV
Bitterness, springs up in our hearts, and if allowed, like a small root, grows like a mighty tree and overshadows our Christian principals. “A poisonous root of bitterness” comes when we allow disappointments to grow into resentment or when we hold on to past offence and grudges. With bitterness, comes jealousy, dissension, and immorality; furthermore it steals our God given peace and joy.
The disappointments and scars of our past can put our lives on hold until they are confronted and dealt with; they can bring fear, depression and all kinds of mental health Issues and need dealing with.
But with Spirit led council and ministering, the wounds of our past can all be healed and opens the door to deliverance, freedom, and a changed life that brings joy and peace that surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds through Christ (PHILIPPIANS 4:7).
We must learn from the story of Esau, for it tells us that our mistakes can have lasting consequences (GENESIS 25:29-34; 27:36).
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
James 4:7-10 NKJV
When one follows the leading of the Holy Spirit, not only does He empowers us to heal the hurts that causes resentment and bitterness; He will direct one’s steps (PROVERBS 16:9) and give you the right words to speak in every situation (MATHEW 10:19).
The truth is, “When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”
Proverbs 16:7 NKJV
I tell you again, ““Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8 NKJV
All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.
