Some people think that in Old Testament times people were saved by their works and good deeds rather than by their faith. But this verse is confirmation that Abram was not saved by righteous living, but by faith. His righteousness was accounted to him because he believed in the Lord.
Abram had been demonstrating his faith through his actions, however it was his belief in the Lord that made him right with God not his actions. (ROMANS 4:1-5).
In Old Testament times, sin was dealt with by the sacrifice of one’s live stock, like in today’s world, when we go through a speed camera too fast and get a fine.
In those days, the offender may of been called by God to sacrificed his best lamb to pay his debt of a particular sin.
Today, we are truly blessed because Christ Jesus made Himself the ultimate sacrifice that paid the debt of all sin; He is the Lamb that was slain REVELATION 5:9). “and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,”
I Corinthians 15:4 NKJV
Jesus not only died to pay our debt of sin, but defeated death itself when He was risen into resurrection life.
Today, nothing has changed; it is through personal relationship with God that we can know Him, trust Him, and believe in Him. And through faith alone, righteousness is accounted to us as it was Abram; that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (ROMANS 10:9).
My brethren, it is through faith in Christ alone that you are saved, and death itself has has become a doorway into resurrection life and a wonderful eternal future with God.
Of course we cannot continue in deliberate sin, their will always be justice and repentance is a condition of salvation. But it is encouraging to know that in this ever darkening world, God not only gives us the desire to do good, but also empowers us to do it (PHILIPPIANS 2:13), and therefore it’s not in our own power that we live right, but in Gods.
My beloved, there is light at the end of the tunnel; that the trials and tribulations of this world are temporary, and the best is yet to come! Even death has lost its sting.
And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.””
Revelation 21:3-4 NKJV
