JAMES 3:7-10
“For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
”James 3:7-10 NKJV

If no human can tame the tongue, why bother to try? Even though we can not achieve perfect control of our tongues in our own strength, we Spirit filled believers have the Holy Spirit, who helps and empowers us to self-control (JOHN 14:15:18). He leads us in diplomacy and righteousness, giving us increasing power to boldly speak out the right words whatever the situation (ACTS 4:31).
He gives us boldness to speak with power and truth, and the right response when we are in confrontation.
The Spirit will remind us of God's love, that we do not react in a hateful manner when we are criticized.
The Spirit of God will heal the hurts and help us to not lash out with emotional responses when offended.
One’s tongue is a power tool; “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
James 3:10 NKJV
The truth is, what we say is either a blessing or a curse, indeed, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Proverbs 18:21 NKJV
Negative, hateful words are nothing less than witchcraft and opens doors over our lives to the devil to bring all kinds of curses, such as poverty, sickness and curses that block relationships, marriage, and even the ability to conceive.
What we speak will set the direction of our lives, for that which we sow, we shall reap.
Furthermore, those curses are passed on to our children and their children and so on.
God created all things by the power of His tongue;
“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”
Psalms 33:6 NKJV
We are children of God, made in His Image (GENESIS 1:27), and what we say is powerful and has lasting influence over our lives.
Discipline should be out of love for the purpose of bringing positive change that takes one toward holiness and edification.
Whilst what we say should be driven by love, truth should not be compromised to please people; but rather, everything we say should be pleasing to God. “Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed.”
Proverbs 27:5 NKJV
James compares the damage one can do with the tongue as a raging fire that's source is from hell itself, and when uncontrolled, can contaminate and destroy one’s self and others (JAMES 3:3-6).
Satan uses our tongues to devide people and destroy relationships. He and his unclean spirits are never far away and listen in on our conversations, even our prayers (JOB 1:6-8).
Idol and hateful words spread destruction quickly, furthermore , no one can stop the consequences of hateful speech. One can apologise, but cannot unsay a single word. Once spoken, the damage is imminent.
We can't change what people say to us, but with the help of the Spirit, one can control his or her response and even break the curses spoken over ourselves and others (ISAIAH 53:3-6).
“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
James 1:19-20 NKJV
Think carefully before you speak; don't allow your tongue to spread hatred with gossip; nor allow anger to add fuel to any fire. But rather, listen to the Holy Spirit, and choose your words carefully out of love.
Dampen down the flames with carefully thought words, but be firm with grace and forgiveness.
“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
Ephesians 4:1-6 NKJV
All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.
